The next evolution of NetChk Protect

Chris Goetti

The next release of NetChk Protect is nearly feature complete. We have some great new features coming your way in this release. In my last post I discussed a few of the new features that we will be releasing such as the credentials management, RDP integration, and scripting. This release is very much about IT Management. NetChk Protect will become less of a once a month tool and more of an every day life saver. As we lead up to Beta I will be letting out a few teasers for you to get an idea of …

Chris Goetti

Hey All,

Well it has been an busy, but exciting week here.  We are now officially VMware Employees!  Whiles some of the names may change, it’s business as usual for NetChk Protect. In fact, we’re heads down developing the next version.

Let me tease you with some of the new features coming in our next release:

New Context menus you can access from the Machine View and Scan View when you right click on a machine. From here you will be able to right click and RDP …

Are there really still doubts that 3rd party patching is necessary?

Chris Goetti

One thing that I am continually surprised to hear are arguments that patching just Microsoft’s products is good enough.  In my seven years at Shavlik that is typically the hurdle we face when we deal with prospects that use Microsoft’s solutions for patch management (WSUS, SMS, SCCM, etc.).  Today, instead of telling you 3rd party products are a concern, why don’t we show you.  On top of that, let’s do it for free with our new Shavlik Security Advisor Scan tool.

Shavlik Security Advisor is a new offering from Shavlik using our industry leading Patch Assessment engine to agentlessly assess your environment. …

Shavlik’s Antivirus Surpasses Competitors in Detecting Nasty Malware

mikebleakmore

Shavlik’s VIPRE antivirus engine has surpassed competitors in recent tests with Antivirus.org and the Malware Research Group. Today we add another to the list. Virustotal is a service that measures the detection of viruses, worms, trojan and other malware and reports how well antivirus engines perform. Virustotal reported today that VIPRE was one of only three engines (out of 41 measured) that caught “VideoPlugin_v43.exe,” a new piece of nasty malware making its way around the Internet.

Usability Improvements for Shavlik NetChk Protect

Chris Goetti

Hey All,

We are about to go to the drawing board regarding our 1st Half 2012 release of NetChk Protect.  I have been reviewing feature requests from our customers and lining up a few possible usability improvements that we are considering for this release.  I wanted to share them with you and get some feedback.

Usability Improvements:

Scan filter by vendor severity.  NetChk Protect has always had the ability to scan by user set criticality, but it requires a bit of maintenance to keep it up to date.  For customers who have a mandate to deploy all critical patches always it would convenient to use the Vendor Severity as a …

Shavlik NetChk Protect 7.8 Release and Upgrade Webinar

Chris Goetti

Shavlik is pleased to announce that NetChk Protect 7.8 is now available for download.  There has been a tremendous buzz in our community and beyond regarding some of the features we are releasing in NetChk Protect 7.8.  The biggest is the feature set around VMware.  If you are a VMware user and rely on VUM this will be something you would want to take a look at.  VUM is moving away from Guest OS and application patching.  That means you will need something to replace this functionality.

VM Enhancements

Patching VMware templates
Disable networking while deploying to offline virtual machines
Optional pre-deployment and …

Shavlik To Begin Enforcing EOL Policy on NetChk Protect

Chris Goetti

Starting in May 2011, Shavlik will begin to enforce our existing end-of-life (EOL) policies for Shavlik NetChk Protect by disabling the ability to update the XML data on legacy/EOL’d versions of the product.    This means the product versions affected will no longer receive data updates and will be locked at the XML data set that it received last.  The reason for this new process is to clean up old versions of the product that are no longer supported and thereby reduce support issues for our customers and reduce turn-around time for support cases.  …
