Fixing The Apple Application Support Error

***UPDATE: 2/18/2011***
If you have issues fixing Apple Application Support from this blog posting, please check out the latest IT.Shavlik offering that fixes the issue.  You can read more about it in this blog posting.

***********************

For those of you who have deployed Apple iTunes 9 or Apple QuickTime 7.6.4 and received the “Please Install Apple Application Support”, we have found a workaround that fixes this.  Installing the Apple Application Support part of the product on affected machines will result in a working program.  (AppleApplicationSupport.msi)

You can get the AppleApplicationSupport.msi by either:

a)  Run a compression program such as WinRAR against the installer, extract AppleApplicationSupport.msi

-or-

b)  Run the install application and leave the program idle at its menus.  Navigate to your temporary director and look for a folder named IXPxxx.tmp (xxx is a random number).  The MSI program will be located in that folder.  Please note:  You must leave the installer running.  If you close the installer, it will delete the temporary directory.

Holding out hope that Apple addresses this issue is getting slim.  Apple released iTunes version 9.0.1 yesterday.  This version also fails for the same reason when using a silent deployment switch.

Oh, and we had a follow up conversation with Apple.  They are now claiming that installing via a silent switch is not supported.  It does, and it did.

At least they did not hang up on us this time.

Sadly I tried this method and still have the same issue. Nothing seems to work so I have been unable to synce my phone in almost a month, which means no MMS upgrade. When I launch QT it gives me the apple Application support error, when launch itunes I get an error 7 please reinstall itunes. I hope others had sucess with your solution.

Kris, I have also heard reports that people had to fully uninstall both QuickTime and iTunes to get it working once again. If you are not trying to deploy via command line with deployment switches (not double clicking the installer), I would send in a ticket to Apple. If you have their products like your iPhone, the support is free. You will just need your serial number. All you need to do is fill out this form and they will call you back: http://www.apple.com/support/expert/

Thanks Jason, I have tried to completely uninstall both programs even using windows install cleaner. I don’t know how to do the command line thing, but I did talk to Apple already. The tech told me it might be my phone, which i knew it wasn’t. He tried the same uninstall stuff nad tried creating a new windows user to install the programs. Then he told me to go to the nearest apple store and have a tech run a check on my phone. Yes, I drove an hour to the nearest apple store and they told me if they plugged my phone in it would erase everything and that I needed to have my PC checked! LOL Square one, welcome me home! There is a microsoft tech, who helped me fix my windows update, that is looking into this also for me. I just want to sync my phone. oh well.

We had this same issue – I was excited to see that their may be a fix when I hit this blog – sadly same issue – I called Apple and after being transferred to 3 different people and 35 minutes on the phone they said it’s a microsoft issue and they can’t help me. – determined to get my friends Itunes loaded on his Vista laptop – I trudged forward – the error I was getting was after it successfully downloaded – then I would hit to launch the .exe file and I would get permission questions from Microsoft – I would hit allow every time – but still no itunes and same error 9 times so I went into microsoft systems and turned off the firewall and the permissions that ask me if I wanted to download things – once I turned off all of that crap – it successfully loaded – I then went back and turned it all back on for him – he is happily loading music as we type. ;)

For a single desktop, Apple suggests uninstalling QuickTime (iTunes) and reinstalling. When installing, manually double click the install.

The best suggestion is to uninstall the product that is presenting this error (iTunes, QuickTime or Safari) and re-installing it if this guide is not working or helping. This is what Apple suggests to their users.

You shouldn’t lose your library… But if you want to get help with this, I would suggest calling Apple support: http://www.apple.com/support/expert . There are help documents on the Apple support page that can assist you: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ . When I install or reinstall any product, I always make sure to back up my files. I would suggest the same if you give this a go on your own without Apple support.

    Thanks for your help.

I used the first method you suggested.
Using WinRAR, I extract all the files into a older and then ran the “AppleApplicationSupport Windows Windows Installer Package”. After that I tried to open iTunes. No longer did I get the AppleApplicationSupport.msi message, but I did get a message that the current iTunes needed an updated version of Quicktime. Because I had extracted all of the files there was a Quicktime right there in the folder ready to be installed. After I did that, everything worked fine. :-)

The only reason I updated my iTunes at all was because it would no longer allow me to update my iPod until I did. This is a chore I always dread because it is always a pain in the @$$.
Thanks for making a little easier.

Installing the Apple Application Support part of the product on affected machines will result in a working program.

    -I don’t get this!

Run a compression program such as WinRAR against the installer, extract AppleApplicationSupport.msi

-I don’t understand how! Could you expand please? :(

Installing the Apple Application Support part of the product on affected machines will result in a working program.
    - If Apple Application Support is not insatlled with iTunes/QuickTime/Safari, the product will not launch. Upon launching, an error message will come up telling you that Apple Application Support is not installed.

Run a compression program such as WinRAR against the installer, extract AppleApplicationSupport.msi
    - If you are getting the Apple Application Support error, you need to find a way to install it to return functionality to iTunes/QuickTime/Safari. The insatller for those programs have multiple installers inside of the program. If you use Winrar and open the installer, you will see the files.

You can call Apple Support and they can walk you through installing the program to get rid of the error message.

Opening the temp folder and running the .msi files worked great! My problem was that I would get the error message whenever I tried to run Quicktime (I don’t have iTunes installed). Now I can use Quicktime no problem! I’m running Windows 7 x64 on a Sony VAIO laptop. Thanks! Woohoo!

I just looked back at some older posts and thought I’d explain for people who don’t understand (I didn’t either, at first).

On a Windows 7 machine (and therefore, probably Vista, too):

Make sure in Windows Explorer you click “Organize” and the “Folder and Search Options” and the “View” tab and make sure you click the button allowing you to view hidden files, folders, etc.

Then you can open your main personal directory on the C: drive and open the “App Data” file folder (which is normally hidden). In App Data, open the Local folder and in that folder, open the Temp folder. Leave that open.

Now download the iTunes installer for your machine (32 or 64 depending on your computer). Double click the installation file (iTunesSetup.exe which will be in the folder to which to saved it) and click “Run.” Then click “Next,” accept the terms, then click “Next” again and don’t click anymore! Leave that window (that says “iTunes + QuickTime” at the top) open.

Look at the “temp” folder you opened previously. Now there should be a folder called IXPxxx.tmp (xxx is a random number). The MSI program will be located in that folder, as the author of this thread said before. Double click on the MSI file you need and it will install only that particular program (in the case of this thread, click “AppleApplicationSupport.msi”). The program you need will be installed. Then you can just click “Cancel” in the “iTunes + Quicktime” installer window that should still be open and magically, the IXPxxx.tmp file will disappear.

Then you can run QuickTime and/or iTunes with no problem.

Personally, I don’t want iTunes on my machine, though I do have an iPod touch. I do want QuickTime and be able to plug in and recognize my iPod Touch, so I ran “AppleApplicationSupport.msi,” “AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi,” “and QuickTime.msi.” I also have “Bonjour” on my machine because I have an Airport Express for printing wirelessly.

Voila. All that you might need from Apple without having to put iTunes on your PC!

    Bonjour,

Ensuite, Quick Time a marché !!!!

Je ne sais pas si çà va marcher pour toutes les configurations, mais pour moi, çà a marché !

    Bonne journée.

What version of iTunes are you trying to install.

I haven’t blogged on Apple Application Support (AAS) for a while. There are multiple versions of AAS. Newer versions of iTunes require the newer version of AAS. If an old version of AAS is installed, you will still get the same error message. Check your add/remove programs (programs and features) in your control panel. Do you see Apple Application Support listed when you uninstall iTunes? How fluent are you with the windows registry?

Try this (**try at own risk, backup your iTunes media files**)
    1) Uninstall iTunes
    2) Uninstall QuickTime (if installed)
    3) Uninstall Safari (if installed)
    4) Look for the following after uninstalling and uninstall these programs:
    - Apple Application Support
    - Apple Mobile Device Support
    - Apple Software Update
    - Bonjour
    5) Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple’s site. Do not use a previous download:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    6) Install iTunes

    My itunes wont start…………..?
Ok, so i have an ipod nano 5th gen.I got it in January.
When i try to start itunes after i plug my ipod in the comp, a message box comes up and it says:”The itunes application could not be opened the required folder cannot be found.”
I tried to uninstall and reinstall but the old itunes wont uninstall another message box comes out and says: “could not access network location%APPDATA%\”
So i am really stumped it wont uninstall, start, or allow me to update to itunes9.
I also tried to delete anything associated with Apple. Everything was successfully deleted EXCEPT Quicktime. So now when i start the computer it tells me to uninstall itunes and reinstall, which is kinda out of the question since it wont let me. I think the reason Quicktime won’t uninstall is i tried to uninstall the apple things first and that one last . Do you know how to fix this? Plz help!

Had to do something similar in my XP64 system. They don’t make it easy, do they? ;-)

When I try to install it (9.21), it says it’s successfully installed and then i get that apple application support error message…so I went and extracted the itunes setup file and clicked the appleapplicationsupport.msi and it all started to load until it got to the end where it wld freeze on registering product registration. After a couple of minutes an error message saying something like windows can’t install the assembly blah blah something like that! I’ve tryed everything! Uninstalling all apple components and also modifying my registry and deleting the temp folder, but nothing seems to work!

This really works, but they forgot the the last 2 steps, which is very important for it to work.

Once you have the “AppleApplicationSupport.msi” file, you have double click on that file to run the program, and it will then actually install it. Then double click the “AppleSoftwareUpdate” file, and it will update any updates necessary. When I did this, it not only corrected the Quicktime start-up issue, but it also fixed problems I was having with Adobe After Effects (this also fixed the output template module” error, and “QT will be disabled” errors I was receiving).

See this link for the fix:

I thought of checking out iTunes’s “OLD APPS”. I was able to download iTunes 7.6.1 and Quicktime. I was so happy to atleast be able to download that even if it’s not the newer version. I can’t access the iTunes store. But again I’m just happy to be able to arrange my music using iTunes.

If the requirement fix here is to extract the AppleApplicationSupport.msi isnt it possible to create the file for download here to run it or install it or am I missing something? Once we have downloaded or extracted the file where do we upload it or will it be a program we can run? I guess I’m a little caught off guard by this error I am also seeing.

Yes, you could do that for your network. Vendors, such as Shavlik, are forbidden to rehost “patches” from vendors. You can extract the file and host it on your own internal IIS site or UNC share. For home users, it will still be a manual process.

Actually you will likely need to run all the .msi files in the package separately after extracting. You may also have to download the latest version of Quicktime and also install separately. That’s what I did and now itunes works fine and am able to synch ipod as well.

Try a full uninstall of any and all Apple product (QuickTime, iTunes, Safari) and try reinstalling. If that doesn’t work, I would give Apple support a call.

    Quoted from the above article:

“a) Run a compression program such as WinRAR against the installer, extract AppleApplicationSupport.msi”

    This worked beautifully..Thank You

Cannot play…get the error message “Please install Apple Application Support.” I have read all your posts but don’t speak the language. Can you provide a step by step fix for this problem? Thanks for any and all help.

This actually worked for me but not before I uninstalled everything Apple. Then I downloaded the quicktime and Itunes combo, and went inside the zip file with 7-zip and click on all the .MSI files, I got a repair or unistall option and I clicked on repair, and I have not had a problem since.

    Here’s how to fix it.
    Uninstall Itunes and Quicktime
Download a program called Windows Install Clean Up
Open it, and remove all applications that are related to Apple.
    Reinstall Itunes.
    Voila!

Well I have found a way to be able to install itunes when encountering the appleapplicationsupport errors. What I did was completely uninstall everything from the add/remove programs. The aas and asu programs could not be removed from the add/remove programs, so I went to C:/programs/common files/ and deleted the apple folder. After that I went to run: regedit and had to manually remove any traces of apple I found. These were all in the same folder. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then MICROSOFT, then WINDOWS, then CURRENT VERSION, then UNINSTALL. There you will have to sift through all of the random named folders until you start seeing anything that has to do with apple. Just press the delete button and you’re good to go. You should locate at least two files, i found three. Once deleted reinstall itunes and you should not have the error messages appear anymore. Looks a lot more complicated than it actually is. Im glad I found out how to do this, and I hope you all can benefit from this info :D

Also you dont have to find all of your music again, it will all appear in Itunes, probably with even more music than you had before. The above method is fullproof and will work everytime if you manage to delete the right files.

Jason, I cannot thank you enough for offering this fix (which meant to download WinRAR, but heck). I had removed QuickTime from my computer, and apparently Apple Application Support along with it (only to install a QuickTime Alternative which turned out to be – not good). So I wanted to re-install QuickTime and ran into the “Apple Application Support” error.

One thing bugs me really. How on Earth can a company like Apple offer an installation routine that apparently has everything present but not (a) see that components are missing, (b) offer to install the missing components, or at least (c) offer some support file explaining how to manually do this?

(Next time one of the Apple fanbois tells me something about how easy and coooool Apple is, they’ll get quite some comment from me.)

    Anyway, thanks again!

Had the same error with Quicktime. I simply downloaded the latest QuickTimeInstaller (7.71.80.42) and double-clicked to install. This fixed the Application Support Error on both, Windows XP 32bit and Windows 7 – 64bit.
Apple may have finally produced a version of the installer that actually works.

Let’s hope they have finally fixed the issue going forward. This issue has been around for way too long for the vendor to not have a solution other than uninstall/reinstall.
